Mr Huw releases his latest album as a free download on his website

"He/She is saying I trust my fans, you'll come to my gigs, buy my merch and tell your friends about my music. So why should I make you pay for the end product when you are, quite frankly, the machine that drives it? You're the marketing company that creates my brand by wearing our T-Shirts, postering your bedrooms/blogs and spreading the word on social networks and (on what I sometimes feel is too often forgotten in this post-connected world) on the street."
Free music! Such a strange combination of words. Is it a slogan? Or quite literally, is it music that is free? The concept of music being given away for free has been batted around for an age now and still it seems there's something special about the word. When I use the term free music, I'm not talking about the millions of leaked songs available every day being churned out by the hype monkeys and their super cool machines! I'm not talking about the supposedly 'free' music that is available on torrent sites and p2p networks. When I say free music I mean the music that has been given away by the artist! The one who has slaved for hours over their masterpiece, perfecting every word and beat. This is the free I talk about and find so fascinating. For an artist to release their album as a free entity is both reveling and for the creator quite a courageous act. He/She is saying I trust my fans, you'll come to my gigs, buy my merch and tell your friends about my music so why should I make you pay for the end product when you are quite frankly the machine that drives it? You're the marketing company that creates my brand by wearing our T-Shirts, postering your bedrooms/blogs and spreading the word on social networks and (on what I sometimes feel is too often forgotten in this post-connected world) on the street. They do this because they love the music, so why not reward them for their hard work with what they love? Either that or Mr Huw is just a very generous chap and wants us all to here his music... You decide!
