Interview with Jay Robinson - Making Waves!

"I've been doing a lot of remix work and making my only EP of original music for 2012 with Stereo MCs and Bam of The Jungle Brothers!"

DJ Jay Robinson has been making waves in dance music over the last year with releases on Krafty Kuts label and making connections in the UK and overseas with some big names! Here we talk a little about his work and future plans.

HJ: Welcome to EMW. How's your year been so far?

JR: Thanks, it's a pleasure to be involved! It's been really busy! I've been doing a lot of remix work and making my only EP of original music for 2012 with Stereo MCs and Bam of The Jungle Brothers!

HJ: Wow! How did you hook up with these artists and what can we expect from your EP?

JR: It was a bit of luck really. Stereo MCs followed me on Twitter (follow @DJJayRobinson) so I got in touch and sent them an idea, and both tracks pretty much fell together! If I had to describe it I'd say it's definitely more housey, think big catchy riffs and bouncy basslines!

HJ: So you are collaborating with other artists. Is this something you've always enjoyed doing?

JR: Yeah! I recently released a track on Fools Gold with Swedish producer Peo De Pitte too, so collaborating is a big part of my musical output. I think it's important to mix things up and do something different to keep ideas fresh. Plus I always end up learning a thing or two from the people I work with!

HJ: Of course! How did you get involved with dance music in the first place?

JR: A couple of friends of mine had turntables when I was at school. I was always learning instruments and quickly getting bored, and turntables seemed like a good way to be musical without getting bored of the same sound over and over! I always loved dance music from being a child, I used always hassle my parents to buy me tapes whenever we were out shopping. I guess it was just a matter of time before I got more involved in electronic music!

HJ: Can you remember your first tape?

JR: If I remember correctly it was Yomanda - Synth & Strings (Egg & Cress)! I used listen to it on repeat in the car, my parents were extremely tolerant...

"It's been really great being able to learn from a key figure in British dance music, it's helped me to learn just what it takes to succeed in the music industry."

HJ: You're also getting releases on Krafty Kuts label Instant Vibes?

JR: Yeh he's become a great friend to me over the past year or so! I'm actually releasing my EP with Stereo MCs on his label. It's been really great being able to learn from a key figure in British dance music, it's helped me to learn just what it takes to succeed in the music industry. Hopefully we will continue to work together long into the future!

HJ: What should we expect from a Jay Robinson set?

JR: You should probably go into it expecting the unexpected. I never play the same set twice, and I'm quite a 'traditionalist' as I use CDJs... I pretty much just play what I think works at the time, it could be house, hip hop, Drum & Bass, anything I think will get people moving!

HJ: Sounds good. What upcoming events are you most looking forward to?

JR: Im playing in Bangor close to where I live (Colwyn Bay) on 24th August in Embassy for Volume which is nice because it involves very little travel! After that I'm playing Shrewsbury Fields festival (Sept 15th) and then Day 2 Night Festival in Belgium (Sept 29th) so its shaping up to be a good end to the summer. I'm looking forward to playing my new EP to see what sort of reaction it gets!

HJ: How do promoters get in touch to book you?
